My thought of GoPro Hero 4 silver, left a review on amazon...
Not GoPro, it is GO-HELL or GO-Dead!!! CAUTION: IF you don't use gopro recommended micro sd card, and even you did??
I got gopro hero 4 silver in October, 2014, my husband and I had planned to use it during our Asia trip in the end of the year of 2014. I'd tested it with videos & pictures a few times at home and there was no problem and I was so naive thinking everything was great. Unfortunately, it turned out not a GoPro, it's GO-HELL for us, :'(.
During our trip in Cambodia in late Dec.2014, the camera started freezing several times, it wouldn't function after just as short of 15 mins use, I had to take out the battery to shut it off. The camera got so hot quickly, the battery part, the lens part, that I really think there's a problem with it.
Tragedy 1: when I was taking a hot air balloon, hero silver 4 got frozen again, I was so occupied on working it out and did not even notice the balloon was already up in the air, until my husband told me 'don't bother, you're going to miss out the view, forget about it (gopro)!'. so you could think, I missed out the chance to take the spectacular view, and the freezing issue affected my mood, I failed to relax and had a hard time enjoying what I was supposed to enjoy.
Then, I searched on internet when back to hotel, I did the card format and when it got stuck I pressed the mode over 10 secs to restart it then it seemed working again. well, not too soon...
Tragedy 2: In Phuket, Thailand, at the most important time that I was shooting underwater video, I was very sure the video light was lit and blinking all the time and made sure the recording minutes was on-going, I was constantly checking if the camera was still working. That's the most wonderful snorkeling during this trip as there're many more to see underwater than earlier islands, it's the highlight and the fun snorkeling experience that I ever had but the camera actually stopped recording after a few seconds, all the recording light and minutes on the screen LIED to me!!! I used the gopro water float so I didn't get to see the display, wondered if it showed screen or not. I realized I recorded nothing when I was back to hotel and imported the files, the importing time was so short that I opened the file and found out it was only recording a few seconds. ...all those breath-taking underwater scenes were not taken!!! felt crying... My husband said he also saw the recording light blinking when I was filming him in water. This was terribly awful that you thought you were recording but it had stopped functioning without any warning.
I know there're issues and I had minimized the use of the camera to only for the most important play time and hoped to save for a good video. but,,, what happened??? there're a few more tragedies like these, I just share these 2 here. Actually, I kind of gave it up and just used my husband's camera but that one was not water-proof because it continued to freeze about few seconds, less than 1 min after pressed video shooting mode.
I wish I had never purchased it then I would still use my nikon cheap underwater camera, I would have at least recorded the precious moment. When I prepared for this trip, I was going to bring also nikon waterproof camera in addition to gopro but my husband said 'why carry that many camera, gopro is good enough'. This is too upsetting...too much frustration. I also spent money on the accessories...
I am still in trip in Thailand when I write this review. I purchased GoPro because I trust its brand name and there were so many great blogs, articles, reviews about how good it was. I did not see this problem in reviews when I shopped it on line. Now I had this big problem I then found out quite some people suffering same problem of mine, especially those who bought hero 4. I had not used it much after the purchase, now that it has passed 3 months I just started to use it every day at this trip, my husband asked me to return it because it's a serious defect. I told my husband that it may be the sd card problem as I used ultra when I purchased gopro hero 4 when it's just released, initially I was going to use sandisk ultra for hero 3+ but hero 4 came out right after I had a thought to buy it. I will buy a new sd card as recommended by gopro and see if the issue persists, hopefully get resolved, it's a trouble and headache to go through the replacement process. If not resolved, I hope GoPro company takes care of my complaint when I return home and will manage to replace another good hero silver 4 to me. I still very much want to enjoy GoPro like others...but now I am not even able to comment how good it is.
I asked some ppl who used gopro during the trip, most of them admitted having suffered freezing issues and one said it's quite 'normal' for gopro and told me every gopro has this problem, seemly to say suck it up (I guess his problem was not that bad like mine)??? One girl who used hero 3+ said hers worked perfectly without problem. I should have just bought hero 3+ and not hero 4!?? I bought hero 4 because I assumed hero 4 has addressed the problems from hero 3+.
My advice to those who are not playing extreme sports but plan to use gopro on upcoming trips, please think and do more researches online, and see if you could take the risk of loosing the chance to shoot videos. I did not say Hero 4 silver failed to take every video but in my case all the most important time, it failed....by chance, random freezing. My Hero 4 Silver did capture some moments but it was not consistent in successful recording. Those who do extreme sports, they probably have more than one gopro, and they could re-do their sports over again for videos. For leisure trips, you cannot rely on gopro alone, you must have other back-up cameras, otherwise, you might deeply regretted and feel sorry for yourself. sorry...I really want to say something good about gopro....I will update later when I get a new sd card and see if it's working properly, otherwise I will have to contact the gopro for a replacement and hopefully they'll listen. (from what I've read and searched, some people said having the freezing issue even with the use of the gopro recommended cards....that makes me worried!)
